Season 17 of Wells Gray Inn Poker Club has ended, with 30 different players taking advantage of the free weekly poker games held on Wednesday evenings at the hotel, starting at 7 p.m.
A tournament is held at the end of each three-month season. Players collect points each time they play, depending on where they finish for the evening. The top eight players plus another player play for prizes at the end of each season.
Standings for the season were: Fred Roach 9300, Cheryl MacHale 6900, Anne Krawec 6650, Millie Rempel 6100, Deb Watson 6050, Chris Moore 5150, Amber Handford 5100, and Cody Hodges 4400. Wild card player was Mark Salden, who won the position on March 23.
In previous seasons, some players have won as many as four games during the season. In Season 17 one player won five times during the 12 weeks of play. A real season record. “Well done Fred.”
Some of the memorable (monster) hands played during this season were a Straight Flush four to eight, and another was from two to six.
The next best hands of this season were Quads (four of a kind) three times for Aces, and once each for Kings, Jacks and Tens alike.
The other four games had various hands of Full Houses. It used to be that getting a Full House was memorable; now it is just common knowledge that you will probably get one at least once during the season.
One memorable hand for three players, at a six-player table, was on evening 12 when the players were sitting next to each other and were dealt pocket pairs (Hole cards) of AA, KK and AA.
The betting was heavy as each one could not figure out what the other players were so proud of. When the dust settled, no one giving up that they could be beat, the two players with the AA’s split the pot.
Winners of the season-ending tournament held March 30 were: 1, Fred Roach; 2, Cheryl MacHale; 3, Millie Rempel.
Season 18 of Wells Gray Inn Poker Club started on Wednesday, April 6.
