Jesse Forcier outruns his last attacker Friday afternoon for a touchdown before half-time. The MSS Roadrunners put down Earl Marriot 46-6 on home field.

A determined early effort to stack up points lead the Mission Roadrunners varsity football team to a 46-6 win over Surrey’s Earl Marriott Secondary School.

“We wanted to put the hammer down on them early,” said head coach Kevin Watrin. “I was pretty pleased with how we did. I thought we played a solid game.”

Mission jumped out fast with first quarter touchdowns by quarterback Kevin Wiens, who rushed it in from 12 yards out, and Brenden Atkinson, running back, off a four-yard jaunt.

Watrin said Atkinson is a “really solid back” for the Roadrunners, and is a player to watch this year.

The Wiens and Rhys Parry combo connected for 12 points in the second quarter, with 22-yard and 44-yard passes.

And fleet-footed Jesse Forcier, who rushed for 161 yards on 10 carries, tallied two touchdowns in the second off a one-yard dash, and then a thrilling 56-yard carry that had the fans cheering.

Grade 10 running back Emmanuel Obahsohan notched the last TD for the Roadrunners in the fourth quarter, blasting 16 yards into the end zone.

Watrin said the strategy in this match-up was to primarily run the ball, and it worked. Mixed up with a fair number of running plays, the difficult-to-predict offense kept the Surrey school on its toes.

The Roadrunners face Pitt Meadows Friday night, the first of four conference games of the season.
