Despite 30 degree weather with 70 per cent humidity on Toronto Island on Wednesday morning, Robbie Thompson of Courtenay won a gold medal in the 20K cycling road race, 18-29 year-old-age category, at the 2016 Canadian Transplant Games.
The double heart transplant recipient won gold in the 5K cycle event Tuesday and is competing in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke swimming events on Friday.
On Thursday, Robbie’s mom Sue Germain told The Record they had just visited Sick Kids Hospital and some of the doctors and nurses that took of Robbie when he had his first transplant in 1999 when he was five months old.
“There were lots of hugs and some tears too,” Sue said.
