Rock Talk: Curling spots still available

Curling culture and events in the city of Abbotsford.

The curling season is in full swing and the Abbotsford Masters are active in numerous area bonspiels.

Abbotsford teams dominated the Chilliwack Spiel earlier this month, led by wily veteran Charley Lindsay who, with his team of Jerry Wallace, Mike Howard, and Bert Creasy went 5-0 to capture first place. Jim Hambly led his ragtag team to a 4-1 record good for third place, and John Munro’s foursome also got paid with an eighth place finish.

League play is well under way at the Abbotsford Curling Centre and there are still spots available.

If you’ve never curled, it’s not too late to start and if you aren’t as spry as you once were, you can curl with a stick, shuffleboard style.I had the pleasure of curling in the Canadian 55+ Games in Edmonton this summer and our last game  was against an Alberta team skipped by a gentleman named Rod Hunter. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, Rod was the third for Don Duguid’s World Championship teams in 1970 and 1971. He was known as “the Arrow,” and arguably had the best curling delivery ever. Mr. Hunter was curling using a stick. I guess if one of the all-time greats can curl with a stick the rest of us should not be too proud to follow suit. It keeps you in the game .
