The Grand Forks Curling Club is celebrating their 50th anniversary of the Rocker Reynolds Mixed Bonspiel March 27-29.
In the days of natural ice, when the spring weather turned warm, the best way to get a rock to the house was to “rock it down” the sheet. Ted Reynolds, “Mr. Curler of Grand Forks”, became a master of “rocking” a rock down the ice.
Since he was so involved in the curling club, the members decided to name the bonspiel after him in 1965, and bought a new trophy dedicated to him—hence the name Rocker Reynolds Bonspiel. And, as it turned out, Ted was on the Jack Acres’ rink that year and they won the “A” event.
The Rocker Reynolds has been played every year since, with the exception of 1976 when the move was being made from the “old curling rink” to the curling rink currently being used.
The Grand Forks Curling Club was honoured to have the noted and recognized CBC sports broadcaster, Ted Reynolds Jr., Ted “Rocker” Reynolds’ son who was born in Grand Forks, in attendance at both the Silver Anniversary Bonspiel in 1990 and the 40th Rocker Reynolds in 2005.
Our theme for this year’s commemorative Rocker Reynolds is “The ‘60s” and we are inviting everyone to join us in making this a memorable event. This is a three-event mixed bonspiel, with a “Team Draw to the Button” competition; also a ‘60’s theme for the Saturday evening banquet, dance and fun.
