The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Vancouver Giants 6-0 on Friday night in Prospera Place.
The Rockets started well jumping out to a 2-0 first period lead on two power play goals courtesy of rookies Erik Gardiner and Nolan Foote. Kelowna outshot the Giants 16-8 through 20 minutes of play.
Nolan Foote kept the offence rolling as he potted his 13th of the season and second of the night on yet another power play. The rookie themed scoring continued as Leif Mattson showed off his skill on a nice backhand forehand move after being sprung on a breakaway giving the Rockets a 4-0 advantage through 40 minutes.
Foote was hot as he put home his third of the night for his first career WHL hat-trick giving the Rockets a commanding 5 goal lead. Leif Mattson tipped home his second of the night on a point shot that came from the stick of rookie defenceman Konrad Belcourt to register his first WHL point on the assist. That would be it for the scoring as all six Rockets goals were scored by rookie skaters. Final score 6-0.
Brodan Salmond improves to 8-7-1-0 on the season stopping all 22 shots he faced to earn his second shutout of the season and second of his WHL career. The Rockets out-shot the Giants 56-22.
The Rockets advance to 31-20-4-0 thus far on the year.
Kelowna is back in action again tonight when they swap barns with the Giants and visit the Langley Events Centre. That game begins at 7:05pm.
The Rockets are on home ice again on Monday for an afternoon battle with the Seattle Thunderbirds. Puck drop for that meeting is at 2:05 p.m.
