The Golden Rockets faced off against the Sicamous Eagles in the season opener in Golden on September 7.
After an intense game that lead to second overtime, the Rockets defeated the Eagles 3-2.
In the first period, the Rockets scored twice, with Steven Bigam getting it into the net with an assist from Louis Feraro. Soon after, the Eagles scored two before the end of the first period.
With a rough and tumble start to the second period, a fight sent two players to the penalty box near the beginning of the second period. With both teams fighting hard to get the puck in the net, neither one scored in the second period.
At the beginning of the third period, the Rockets had taken 35 shots on goal. Tying it up in the third, Jacob Dewar scored on the Eagles with an assist from Brendan Sime-Vivian, tying up the game once more, sending it into overtime.
An entire overtime period went by without either team scoring. In second overtime, the Rockets scored the winning goal, taking victory on the first regular game of the season.
Around 250 people attended the first game.
The following night, the Golden Rockets faced off against the Kimberly Dynamiters at the “Plywood Palace,” in Golden.
In the first period, the Dynamiters scored, and the Rockets couldn’t get any in. The second period proved eventful with multiple power plays, and the Dynamiters scored again on the Rockets. Not long after, the Rockets brought the score up 2-1 with Deward getting it in the net with an assist from Ryan Taylor and Sidney Cruz.
The excitement continued in the second period, with the Dynamiters scoring a third goal. Rockets goalie Ryan Baker switched out and Colton Iwaschuk took the net. Dewar scored the second Rockets goal from Janson Pashniak and Bryce Trimmer.
In the third period, the Dynamiters scored again, bringing it up 5-2. The Rockets were unable to make a recovery, and the Dynamiters scored again, ending the game in a 6-2 loss for the Rockets.
The Golden Rockets next home game is Saturday, September 22 at 7:30 p.m. against the Chase Heat.
