A strong effort in Fernie wasn’t enough to upset the top team in the division, as the Golden Rockets fell 5-2 against the Ghostriders on Friday night.
“Our first period was decent,” said Head Coach Ty Davidson. “I was fairly happy with the effort we were putting out.”
The Rockets outshot the Ghostriders 12-11 in the first, but let in one goal, and entered the second frame trailing. Three quick goals in the second left the Golden boys struggling to come back from a four-goal deficit.
“It still wasn’t a bad period. We were all over them at times in the second, but those first five minutes at the start put us way behind,” said Davidson.
A slashing penalty, taken by Fernie’s Matt Carr, gave Golden the opportunity to start making up some of those goals. Rookie Carson George was able to score on the power play, with assists going to Lyndon McBryan and Ryan Dormer.
Another power play goal, again from George, narrowed the lead even further in the third, after fighting majors were handed out to Ghostriders Dylan Robertson and R.T. Rice, and Rockets Marc Lepine and Kolten Krchnak. An additional two minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct were given to Rice, giving Golden the important man advantage.
Almost halfway through the period, however, Fernie scored the fifth and final goal.
“At times we were really controlling the play. The game was a lot closer than the score suggests,” said Davidson. “I mean, we didn’t even give up a single power play opportunity.”
The Rockets head to Kimberley for their next game on Thursday, before hosting the Dynamiters on Saturday Nov. 12, and Tuesday Nov. 15, both games at 7:30 p.m.
“We have three straight games against Kimberley coming up. It should be an interesting little series,” said Davidson.
