The sacrifice of losing her summers to train and spending them away from her friends and family has paid off for Lisa Roman.
The 21-year-old from Langley, who has been in Ontario the past couple of months, left for Europe yesterday (Monday) as part of Canada’s U23 women’s rowing team.
“Making this team was a pretty big goal for me,” she admitted. “It has been a goal of mine ever since last year when I came to Ontario to train.
“This was my next step in the right direction.”
“This makes up for all the days I spend away from home,” she added.
Canada is training in Belgium for a week before they head to Amsterdam and the U23 world championships (July 20-24).
Roman has competed at the national level before, including the 2009 Canada Summer Games where she won a pair of gold medals and a silver.
But this will be her biggest competition so far.
“I would assume (our chances) are pretty good, but honestly, I don’t know,” she admitted.
Roman hopes this is just the start as she works to represent Canada at the 2016 Summer Olympics, figuring that due to Canada’s strength in rowing, the senior women’s national team is pretty much set for the London Games in 2012.
Roman enters her senior season with the Washington State Cougars rowing team this fall.
