Rob Ross scored in the ninth minute as the Silver Stars clipped Kal Tire 1-0 in Okanagan Oldtimers 50+ Soccer League play Thursday night at Grahame Park.

Ross took a feed from Tim Penaluna and beat keeper Al Bensmiller with a quick shot. Bensmiller made a few solid saves before switching spots with central defender Roger Irving, who pulled a muscle.

The Tiremen, buoyed by the return of all-star defender Rob Parkin after a near two-year absence, had a handful of chances in the second half.

Stars’ keeper Ray Timms was aggressive as he came out to stone Kevin Mitchell from in close and later made a diving save on a Gordie Campbell 18-yarder.

Defenders Bob Oldfield and Steve Coombs shone for the Stars in the season opener for both Vernon clubs.
