Oak Bay High’s senior advanced men’s pair of Kai Leong, front, and Benjamin Beatty row to second-place in qualifying during Sunday’s Lower Island championships at Elk Lake.

Oak Bay High’s rowing squad came away from Elk Lake with a key award from last weekend’s lower Island championships.

“First and most importantly, Oak Bay won the Efficiency Trophy,” says teacher Nichelle Soetaert, one of six coaches of the 42-athlete team.

“This trophy is based upon performance per entry, meaning that it is the school that was the most successful in the most events. We are so proud to have won this and the students are so happy. It is a testament to the dedication of our coaching staff and the passion of our students.”

Additionally, Oak Bay also won the Senior Aggregate Overall Category.

“The most important win for us was the Efficiency Trophy. This is the true proof of our success,” Soetaert says.

In the individual events, Oak Bay had wins in the senior women’s pairs, junior novice men’s 8s, senior novice men’s 8s senior advanced women’s singles and senior novice women’s 8s.

Oak Bay finished second in the senior advanced men’s 8s, the senior novice men’s 4s and senior women’s 4s.

The lower Island finals concluded the nine-week fall high school rowing season, but many of Oak Bay’s athletes join the Gorge Narrows Rowing Club or Victoria City Rowing Club for training through winter and spring.
