The Vernon Christian Royals split their opening games of the abbreviated North Zone senior boys soccer season.

The Royals opened with an 8-1 stuffing of the King’s Christian of Salmon Arm.

On Thursday, the Royals, missing four key players, bowed 3-2 to the Pleasant Valley Saints.

“We had a lot of close shots that just sailed over the bar,” said coach Branden Hoogendoorn.

The Royals visit King’s Christian on Tuesday.

In senior girls volleyball action, the Royals opened league play with a pair of wins on Tuesday, starting with a two-set sweep (25-18, 25-11) of the Salmon Arm Jewels.

Vernon Christian backed this up with a solid 25-12, 25-16 win over King’s Christian.

“Our strong serving and strong attack left the other teams scrambling,” said head coach Jason Reedyk.

The Royals will host league games against the Eagle River Talons of Sicamous and Charles Bloom Timberwolves of Lumby on Tuesday with action starting at 5 p.m.

In senior boys play this week, the Royals brushed back the Seaton Sonics 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 13-25, 25-20).

The Royals showed a lot of improvement coming off of their host tournament last weekend. Good ball distribution by Colton Doesburg and strong hitting by Landon Matties led the way.

Vernon Christian travels to Sicamous on Tuesday to take on Eagle River.
