Royals rout Panthers

The C&A Royals grounded the Anchor Inn Panthers 8-1 in Pee Wee baseball action Tuesday night at rainy Creekside Park.

The Royals, who had an impressive third-place finish in the Rutland tournament last weekend, got superb outings from first-year pitchers Nathan Nesbitt (six strikeouts) and Bailey Wellman (three strikeouts). Lyndon Shykora finished up.

The Royals’ bats came alive in the second, highlighted by a Tyler Wellman home run.

On Sunday afternoon, the Royals completed a very strong weekend by holding on for an 9-8 victory over the host team, taking third place in the eight-team Wesley Nelson Tournament.

Nesbitt, Josh Gares, Jackson Brownrigg, Tyler Wellman and Bailey Wellman started the Royals off with consecutive hits for an early four-run lead.

Nesbitt, Caleb Versteeg and Tyler Wellman were impressive on the mound for the Royals, capped off by Wellman’s high-pressure strikeout of the final Rutland batter with the tying Rutland run on third base.

In Bantam action, the Vernon Johnston Meier Meteors fell 9-4 to the Wayside Press Savage Bulls in the pouring rain Tuesday night at Marshall Field.

The Meteors had a hard time hitting the wet ball, but Shelby Hartwig went 2-for-2, while Mitchell Lukacs and Tyler Wiebe both cranked out triples.

Hartwig and Wiebe shared the pitching for the Meteors.

The Meteors posted a pair of wins over Kelowna teams in Sunday action.

The Meteors earned a 17-4 victory over Kelowna #1 with Hartwig going 3-for-3 with a single, double and a triple, three ribbies and four stolen bases.

Jacob O’Quinn, Lucas Colgan, Jordy Griffiths, Wiebe and Lukacs also batted a thousand with a combined seven walks. Lukacs hit another monster home run, clearing not just the fence but the batting cages as well, giving him five dingers on the season.

In the second game, the Meteors ran over Kelowna #2 12-4.

Lukacs went 2-for-2 with three ribbies and two stolen bases. Brayden Damini added four stolen bases and a ribbie, while Hartwig had two hits and five stolen bases. Wiebe, Franky Gettis and O’Quinn all batted a thousand.

The Vernon Sky Chiefs split a Sunday Midget doubleheader with the Kamloops Dingers Sunday at Marshall Field.

Kamloops used a five-run final inning to take the first game 14-8, while the Sky Chiefs won the second game 14-8.

A group of Vernon first-year Mosquito players, calling themselves the Vernon Canadians, lost 7-6 to the Kamloops River Dogs in the finals of the recent West Kelowna Tournament.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Chase Batchelor smacked triple to right to right field in a 2-2 count, scoring Jacob Green, Eric Foufoulas and Carter Morris and giving Vernon a 6-5 lead. The River Dogs responded with two runs.

Vernon’s game MVPs went to Morris and Batchelor.

Morris finished third in the 2001 age group fastest pitch contest with a toss of 48 miles per hour.

Earlier, the Canadians used a six-strikeout showing from game MVP Landon Harison in a 12-7 win over the West Kelowna Red Sox.

Maguire Lauridsen supplied a triple, a walk and two runs scored.

The C’s then rubbed out the West Kelowna Giants 9-3 with MVP Stevie Schols supplying a triple, walk, two RBI and two runs.

Schols, Morris and Maguire Lauridsen handled the Vernon pitching.

The C’s opened with a 17-7 victory over the Kelowna Blue Demons.

MVP Ryan Gamage and Christopher McIntosh handled the hill for the C’s, who got two hits and three RBI from Tyler Sedlacek and two hits and three runs from Batchelor.
