Rugby squads face final regular season tilts

Lots to watch and cheer on local sports fields this week

As rugby season windsdown, local squads are finishing their final regular season games.

The University of Victoria men’s rugby team heads to Vancouver for the last regular season game against the Vancouver Rowing Club Saturday, April 9.

The Castaway Wanderers men’s premier rugby team also plays its final game of the season Saturday, April 9, hosting the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds at Windsor park at 2:45 p.m. The women’s premier Wanderers hit the field for their final regular season tilt Saturday, visiting the Westshore premier women at the Juan de Fuca fields at 11:30 a.m.

High school girls’ soccer hits the turf Tuesday, April 21 with AAA Oak Bay at Spectrum for a 3:30 p.m. start at Hampton field.

In A/AA play, SMUS visits Parkland for a 3:45 p.m. game at Blue Heron field while GNS hosts Lambrick Park, also beginning at 3:45 p.m.

High school badminton continues Tuesday, April 12, when Oak Bay hosts Claremont, Glenlyon Norfolk School hosts Spectrum and St. Michaels University School visits Mt. Doug. All games start at 3:45 p.m. On Thursday, April 14 SMUS hosts Oak Bay, also at 3:45 p.m.

In high school tennis, Wednesday, April 13 match-ups have Oak Bay AAA visiting Stelly’s at Centennial Park at 3:30 p.m. and SMUS facing GNS at Carnarvon at 3:30 p.m.

In boys senior rugby, SMUS heads to Claremont Tuesday, April 12 for a 3:45 p.m. tilt while GNS visits Edward Milne for a 3:45 p.m. kick-off. On Thursday, April 14, GNS heads to Stelly’s for a 3:45 p.m. start.

The high school track and field season continues with a league meet at UVic April 13 beginning at 4 p.m. while high school cycling has its first appearance of the season today (Friday, April 8) when the AFD BikeJam heads to Juan de Fuca Rec Centre.

In local baseball, the Victoria Premier Eagles open the season Saturday, April 9 with a double-header against the Parksville Royals. The first pitch is at 12 p.m. with the second game set to start at 2:30 p.m., both at Lambrick Park.

The Premier Eagles hit the road Sunday, April 10, taking on the Abbotsford Cardinals.

Local hockey fans have plenty of action still to come this season with the Victoria Cougars hosting the Cyclone Taylor Cup April 7 to 10. The champions from the KIJHL, PJHL and the VIJHL, along wth the  Island’s second-place finishers, the Campbell River Storm, compete for this prestigious the cup and the chance to move on to the Keystone Cup.

Looking ahead, the Kool Oak Bay Half Marathon, 10 K, relay and kids’ run will race through Oak Bay May 29, starting and finishing in Windsor Park. The scenic race tours through Oak Bay Village and Beach Drive. and the early start for the half marathon will see runners head out at 7 a.m., followed by the regular start for the half, relay and 10k at 8 a.m. The kids’ 1km challenge is set to start around 10:30 a.m. Learn more and register at oakbayhalf.com
