Rupert youth soccer calling for volunteers

Every sport needs a multitude of volunteers to succeed, and that’s even more true with youth soccer, Prince Rupert’s largest-played sport.

Every sport needs a multitude of volunteers to succeed, and that’s even more true with youth soccer, Prince Rupert’s largest-played sport.

Prince Rupert Youth Soccer Association (PRYSA) has approximately 600 kids participate in the league each year, from U6 to U19. Although it doesn’t start until April, it’s calling out for volunteers early in order to help the league run more smoothly and keep players and parents happy.

“The more help we get, the more efficiently things can run, which in turn will impact the players. They’ll have a more enjoyable time learning the game of soccer and that’s all we want,” said vice president Leigh-Anne Magnusson.

A lack of volunteers is nothing new for the organization, which has struggled to attract volunteers in the past. It depends on more than 100 people to help it run successfully. That includes the months leading up to the season as well as during league play.

The amount of volunteers likely won’t stop the league from running, but it could compromise how well it’s run.

“We don’t want it to affect the game itself and for the kids to get out there and have everything they need,” said Magnusson.

In the past, a lack of volunteers has left players, parents and coaches frustrated. But if more people stepped in, it would take away the burden and help things run better, Magnusson said.

“You don’t need to be a soccer pro to volunteer as we have a variety of positions available. All you need is a little time and desire to help the kids thrive and succeed,” she said.

Because of its popularity, the vice president feels it’s integral to Prince Rupert’s youth.

“Having a sport that’s open to everyone is very important for our community,” said Magnusson.

Some of the volunteer positions the league is looking for includes help with coaching, sponsorship, equipment, referee scheduling and more. There may also be a position for a registrar and secretary in the next year.

PRYSA will hold its AGM on Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Jim Ciccone Civic Centre. Every parent or guardian who registers a child in the league is a member and Magnusson encourages them to come out and make themselves heard.
