Ryder Hesjedal took a well deserved break during the rest day on Monday from his hunt for a top-10 placing at the Giro d’Italia.

The grand tour resumes on Tuesday, a hilly, high climbing 139-kilometre stretch from Ponte di Legno to Val Martello.

Hesjedal goes into the stage 11th overall in the general classification, six minutes and 44 seconds back of Rigoberto Uran in the Maglia Rosa.

It’s Hesjedal’s best campaign in a grand tour since winning the 2012 Giro, though the crash he suffered with his Garmin Sharp teammates in the Team Time Trial of Stage 1 will likely cost him a shot at the pink jersey.
