A Cedar Hill middle school student is a Canadian national karate champion.
Olivia Brodie, 13, won the girls 12-to-13 year-old, 35-kilogram kumite (sparring) division at last week’s official Karate Canada National Championships in Halifax, N.S.
Brodie also won a silver medal in the girls 12-13 kata (form) division, and she’ll represent Canada in both disciplines.
Brodie is qualified to compete for Canada at the upcoming international tournaments Pan-Am Karate Championships in Brazil in August and is on the early track to qualify for a future Olympics, perhaps from 2028, said her karate sensei Richard Mosdell of Kenzen Sports Karate.
Karate is being introduced at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.
“Brodie trains four times a week never missing a practice, and even though she is in the youngest elite division, she has the mental focus from karate to have many wonderful competition experiences for years to come,” Mosdell said.
