To win races is always the goal, but when you can win with your best time ever, then that’s icing on the cake.
At Nanaimo on the weekend, several Peninsula Track Club athletes recorded either Personal Best (PB) or Seasonal Best (SB) performances and were able to do so even when not winning the event.
Leading the way was 11-year-old Sydney Green, who set PBs along with her gold medal performances in the 60m (9.16), 100m (14.72) and 200m footraces, as well as the 60m Hurdles (11.08).
Fellow 11-year-old Adrianna Hilton set a PB in taking the 600m in 1 minute, 57.93 seconds and equalled her PB in placing second in the High Jump (1.10m). Hilton also won the 1000m (3:34.10) and placed third in the Long Jump (3.31m).
Julia Peterson, 13, had double victories in the Javelin (24.46m) and Shot (7.52m) and added a silver in the Discus (18.42m). Alexis Newton, 13, raced to third place 46.99s in the 300m.
Among the boys, Aiden Schandl, 12, had two PBs — one for winning the Shot with his 7.11m heave and another with his second place in the 300m in 47.07s. Schandl added silvers in the 100m (14.72) and the 200m (30.19).
Kynan Smith, 13, won both the Discus (25.68m) and the Shot (9.19m) and was second in the Hammer Throw (25.27m).
Dorian Jensen, 11, had a PB in placing second in the 800m Race Walk (6:19.15).
Christian Silva, 11, placed second in the Javelin (20.20m).
At the Masters level, Dean Johnson (M50) turned in a SB as he took the 800m in 2:46.44. He had another SB while placing second in the 100m (13.98) and was also second in the 200m (29.82).
Don Brodeur’s ((M65) winning Discus throw of 41.75m was a SB, as was Carl Jensen’s (M40) second place Shot Put (9.55m). While Jensen was also placing second in the Discus event (24.15m), Peter Auvinen (M65) was reeling off a series of winning throws in the Javelin (25.85m), Discus (24.14m), Hammer (19.80m) and Shot (8.07m).
Anne Murfitt (W55) collected her share of winning performances as she threw the Discus 15.21m, the Javelin 16.10m, the Hammer 21.73, and the Shot 6.92m.
