Claremont secondary athlete Max Szczawinski is off to a strong start this summer with three medals at the Vancouver Island high school track and field championships.
Szczawinksi set a new senior boys Island record of 43.91 in his specialty, the discus. He also threw for silver in the shot put and bronze in the javelin.
Szczawinski’s discus record breaks the measure of 41.65 set in 2015.
Lambrick Park’s Martin Eckard set a new senior boys Island shot put record of 14.01m.
He now owns both the Island senior and junior records, as he set the junior record in 2014 with a throw of 13.30m.
Eckard’s shot put record is a full metre over the 2014 mark set by Port Alberni’s Luke Bradley.
The two throwers will compete at the provincial track and field championships in Nanaimo Tuesday to Thursday.
