Saanich Tigers snare fifth Island title

Pair of Saanich teams headed to provincial lacrosse championships

The Saanich Tigers look to defend their Junior B provincial lacrosse championship this weekend when they head to Coquitlam.

The Tigers have represented the Island at five straight provincials since 2012 and are the winners of two titles in the past three years.

Also headed to provincials this year is the Saanich Intermediate B team.

It’s the first time in six years the Saanich Int. B squad will compete in the provincials, said team governor Chris Jackson.

Saanich Intermediate B started the season late, not knowing if they would be able to field a team, Jackson said. Once the team came together, it finished the season with only one loss.

Coach Brian Suckling stepped in three weeks ago, one of many coaches who’ve chipped in to help the team this year.

“We had different coaches stepping in and helping out,” Suckling said. “The team plays strong together. We won two straight over Juan de Fuca in the playoffs.”

Unfortunately, the squad will be missing a group of its top players at provincials.

“It’s already a good story, it’ll be an even bigger story if we can win provincials,” Suckling said.

Five players will graduate to the next level and are likely to move on to Junior B.
