Sabres wrestlers place second

Guildford Park pair win gold medals at Fraser Valley tournament

A young group of wrestlers from Guildford Park Secondary combined for six medals and a second place finish in the team standings at the Upper Fraser Valley tournament in Abbotsford.

“This result came as a bit of a surprise for me because of the strength of our zone and the fact that we only had two senior wrestlers,” said Mark McRae, one of the coaches of the Guildford Park Sabres. “Our team is largely comprised of Grade 9 wrestlers.”

Will Thamavong in the 57 kg. class and Gagan Hundal in 48 kg. group were the two Sabres to win gold medals.

“Will has only been wrestling for 2 years but has really emerged as a medal threat (at the provincial championships) this year,” said McRae. “Gagan is one of our very talented Grade 9 wrestlers who looks like he could also be a force at the BC championships.”

Hundal defeated Sabres teammate Diego Esparza in the finals, leaving Esparza with a silver medal. Bronze medals went to  Linden Nguyen in the 63 kg. class, Grade 10 wrestler Dacious Richardson in the 60 kg. category and Grade 9 athlete Husayn Mouhamed in the 41 kg. group.

In girls competition, Grade 9 wrestler Zion Lee won the gold medal in the 54 kg. category.

The provincial championship begin today (Thursday) and run through to Saturday in Duncan.
