After two seasons in the PACWEST with the KPU (Kwantlen Polytechnic University) Eagles, Samantha Savoy is moving on.
The Fleetwood Park Secondary graduate will play at the CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sports) level next season, agreeing to join the UBC Okanagan Heat in Kelowna.
Savoy enjoyed two successful seasons at Kwantlen Polytechnic, earning a student-athlete scholarship for her achievements in both academics and athletics. In each of her two seasons, the Eagles placed fourth at the PACWEST (Pacific Western Athletic Conference) provincial tournament.
Just prior to her second season at KPU, Savoy learned she would have to change schools if she was to continue her post-secondary soccer career as Kwantlen Polytechnic decided to abandon its athletic programs.
“After the cancellation of the KPU athletics program I knew I needed to find somewhere new to call home,” said Savoy. “I am thrilled to be committed to the UBCO Heat women’s soccer team.”
On making the move up from PACWEST to CIS competition, the veteran defender is confident she will make the adjustment.
“My two seasons in PACWEST playing under coach Julie King and Joan McEachern have prepared me well for the big step to the CIS.”
Violet Bacon, also of Surrey, will join the Heat in the fall. The five-foot-seven fullback will graduate from Surrey Christian high school in June.
A defensive specialist, Bacon has played in the B.C. Soccer Premier League with Surrey United ‘98 for five years. She also won a B.C. high school championship with Surrey Christian in 2013, and was a member of the Surrey United squad which competed at the U18 nationals.
“Having played on the same team for five years, the transition (to the Heat) may be difficult,” said Bacon. “But I am looking forward to the new experiences with the players and coaches. Playing at the university level is something I have always wanted so I am very excited and happy with this decision.”
