Nervous, marching her way out to the Canadian national anthem, Grade 9 Lake City secondary wrestler Tyleen Scaiano grappled her way to a silver medal March 3-4 in Salmon Arm at the 2017 provincial wrestling championships.
The North Fraser Rapids wrestling club member is now ranked second in the province in the 47-kilogram weight class and took on the top-ranked national wrestler, Grade 12 Alexia Seal, in the final in what turned out to be a tough battle.
Scaiano’s dream, however, to attend a national wrestling championship has now come true as she will travel to Windsor, Ont. from April 6-9 to compete at the tournament.
Coaches Tyler Scaiano (her dad) and Ian Pare noted it is quite an accomplishment for such a young wrestler at just 14 years of age.
“Tyleen has a passion for wrestling and is extremely dedicated,” her coaches said. “She always does her best and will go far in the sport of wrestling. She has a gift and we as coaches look forward to watching it all unfold in the near future.”
In four years of wrestling Scaiano has collected several accolades and accomplishments including a gold medal at the 2016 BC Summer Games, a gold medal at the 2016 War on the Floor Tournament, a gold medal at the 2017 BC Age Class Tournament, a gold medal in the 2017 North Central Zone Championships and a silver medal at the provincials.
She’ll also be competing at the 2017 Western Regionals in Las Vegas April 25-28, then at the 2017 Nordhagen Classic in Calgary, Alta. from May 27 to June 1, before possibly competing at the Canada Summer Games Trials for Team BC.
Anyone interested in supporting Scaiano is invited to attend a wrestling fundraiser on Saturday, April 1 starting at 6 p.m. at the Laughing Loon Restaurant for a pasta dinner, buffet and silent auction. Tickets are $25. Items wished to be donated to the silent auction can be done by e-mailing TSwrestling@outlook.com.
