A 14-year-old Summerland athlete hopes to win medals in two running events at the B.C. Summer Games in Abbotsford later this month.

Jason Scherban will compete in the 800-metre and 1,200-metre events.

In 2010, when he was nine years old, he started running and since that time, he has attended some provincial competitions.

He said he enjoys the technical challenges of running these distances.

“It’s a lot more difficult than sprinting for 100 or 200 metres,” he said.

“There’s a lot more strategy that has to go into it.”

Scherban trains with Okanagan Athletics in Kelowna. He said the coaches, Malinda Elmore and Teegan   have provided plenty of help as he trains.

He anticipates a strong finish at the games.

“I’ve rated pretty high in my age category,” he said.”I think I’ll be able to get a spot on the podium.”

He admits that getting to the podium will be difficult, especially in the 800-metre competition.

One of the runners in that event has a time just one second slower than Scherban’s time in the same event.

In the 1,200-metre competition, there are athletes close to his time, but not as close as in the 800-metre event.
