Seahawk squads get set for upcoming playoff action

The Handcraft Woodworks Sooke Seahawks atom football team played its final regular season game on Sunday at Edward Milne school field. Their opponents were the Peninsula Wildcats. The mighty Seahawk defence played a huge part in a convincing 11-0 Sooke victory. Leading the defence was linebacker Richard Innes with hard-hitting tackles all over the field. Other notables with solid tackles were Zac Bedford, Robbie Lowerison, Andrew Abell and Dreydon Lindquist. Lindquist and Abell also contributed on offence with solid runs throughout the game.

Leading the offence was quarterback Nick Pollock with many dazzling runs including a 20-yard touchdown, the only one of the game against a solid Peninsula defence. Other offensive players contributing were fullbacks Cole Johns, Jordan Schutt and Randy Ross. Tyson Bastone, Rory Wood, Ryan Hanlon, Spencer Leslie, Bailey McMillan and Ky Berger blocked very well on the offensive line for the Seahawks. Kicker Alec MacKenzie kicked a two-point convert as well as a field goal in the game. Mackenzie has not missed any converts or field goal attempts and has done an incredible job for his team all season. The Atom Seahawks finished the season with a 7-3 record and sit in third place in the standings. Sooke will now face the Westshore Warriors this weekend in the playoffs. The Warriors edged the Seahawks 12-6 in their only meeting this season. Another close, hard fought contest is expected.

Village Food Markets’ Sooke Seahawks pre-atoms  are proud to call an end to another successful  (6-10 years old) regular season. The march toward the Silver Cup is on with the cup game June 17 at Royal Athletic Park. With this past weekend’s back and forth joust with Penninsula Wildcats the Seahawks dropped a defensive battle 13-6.

With team leader and MVP of the game Spencer Logan led with 10 tackles at or behind the line of scrimmage, followed by blocks and tackles from his defensive team-mates Caleb Carrier, Jacob Lamontagne, Grayson Hoolaeff, Josh Danielson, and first year six-year old Sian Cyr.

Leading the way on defense was d-man of the game Thomas Lowerison who singlehandedly stopped many a Wildcat upfield rush. The offense was led by quarterback Louis-Philipe Gagnon who passed, swept and even blocked for sensational wing-back and offensive player of the game Ben Power who had the lone score of the game. Ben and Simon Herald ran sweeps and criss-cross fakes expertly. Wingback extraordinaire Kieran Franklin had to leave the game early with what turned out to be a minor injury. Better safe than sorry, folks, and he was missed on both sides of the ball.

The next game and first playoff effort comes against the Cowichan Bulldogs – who the Seahawks took a good bite out of last time they played, securing a big win.
