The Timbermen were outbattled by the Warriors in the finals.
The Langley Warriors defeated the Nanaimo Timbermen 10-4 in Game 3 on Thursday in Langley to capture the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association championship. It was the first title in that franchise’s history.
“Things didn’t really go the way we hoped they would go,” said Mike Maughan, Timbermen coach. “Our spirits were pretty good going into the game, but they kind of got on us really early, got a couple quick ones and then from there we were kind of fighting it the whole way.”
Nanaimo had a tough start, falling behind 5-0 after one period and 10-2 after two.
“You start over-thinking things and trying to push too much or press too much and you’ve really just got to stick to your guns and hope your run of play is coming,” Maughan said.
But the Warriors got good goaltending and were better in all areas, outshooting the T-men 62-38. Maughan said the opponents were full value for their WCSLA championship.
“All we can do is give credit to them. They’re a strong team; there’s not really a lot of holes in their roster,” he said.
He was proud that his guys battled until the end of the game, stuck together, and pointed out they outscored the opponents in the final period.
“We talked about what being a Timberman is all about and it’s playing with heart and playing with pride and playing with some class,” the coach said.
Brendon Anger scored twice in the game and Andrew Miller and Corey Shires were other scorers.
Langley advances to the Presidents’ Cup national championship tournament.
