The Nechako Nordics Ski Club in Vanderhoof hosted the first race of the Teck Northern Cup series this past Saturday, January 14th, at the NVSA grounds just west of Vanderhoof.

As temperatures warmed up to minus 6 snow conditions were great. 77 skiers aged 4 to over 50 participated in this event. They took to the trails of the NVSA grounds to test themselves against the clock in an interval start skate technique race. Racers that participated and completed their respective courses also earned points for their clubs, and additional points could be earned by placing in the top 5 in their category. Throughout the season aggregate points are tabulated for each participating club as they work toward claiming the regional banner. Caledonia Nordics of Prince George had a strong showing along with other skiers from several other northern communities including Nechako Nordics of Vanderhoof, Williams Lake Ski club and Omineca Ski club from Burns Lake.  The Northern region includes clubs from 100 Mile House to Terrace and Kitimat.

For many young skiers this event is an introduction to racing, and for others it represents an opportunity to stay sharp for provincial level races. The next Teck Northern Cup ski race will take place on Jan. 29 at the Omineca ski club in Burns Lake.

This event could not be possible without the support of local volunteers and businesses, some of which provided the coveted cookie medals and hot chocolate to players. Teck Resources Ltd. is the title sponsor of Cross Country BC’s Skier Development Program and regional cup races, thereby supporting excellence in sport and providing youth with experiences that will help them prepare for the future.
