Seaton boys and girls both won the North Zone Grade 8 volleyball championships Tuesday night.

The Sonic boys, coached by Doug Kozak, defeated the Fulton Maroons 2-1 (19-25, 25-20, 15-9) at Seaton.

“The highly talented Maroons had us on the run right from the start in the championship game and in the first set, basically served us off the floor,” said Kozak. “We were able to turn the tables on them in the second game and regained our balance enough to take the second set with some relentless hitting from the our middle and outside hitters. The Maroons had some great defensive pickups and scrambles but eventually buckled under our relentless pressure.

“The season certainly ended in fine form with an outstanding match from both teams and a great display of sportsmanship from both schools.”

The Sonic girls, coached by sisters Gabby Tishenko and Tonia Ghattas, won all three round -robin matches, grounding the Kalamalka Lakers in the battle of 2-0 teams.

Seaton then stopped the Revelstoke Avalanche, Shuswap Rams and Kal for their second straight North Zone title.

Meanwhile, the Valley Senior AA Boys Championships open today at 1 p.m. with the host Maroons going up against the Sa-Hali Sabres of Kamloops and host Seaton meeting the George Elliot Coyotes of Winfield.

The Maroons take on the South Okanagan Hornets at 4:30 and face the Okanagan Mission Huskies at 6:30. Seaton plays Princess Margaret Mustangsof Penticton at 3:20 and the Valleyview Vikings of Kamloops at 5:40. The gold-medal match goes Saturday at 4 p.m. (@ Fulton).
