Selects take Platinum spring hockey title

The 1999 Black Forest Noodle Valley Selects of Vernon iced the Langley Nitro 1-0 in the Platinum final of the Mainland Cup Spring Hockey Tournament Sunday in Vancouver.

The 1999 Black Forest Noodle Valley Selects of Vernon iced the Langley Nitro 1-0 in the Platinum final of the Mainland Cup Spring Hockey Tournament Sunday in Vancouver.

There were 30 teams in their age group and Vernon – coached by Murray Caton, Scott Kowalski and Brad Shaigec – was seeded in the highest division.

Conor Webb was great in goal earning the shutout and game MVP Matthew Kowalski scored the only goal the Selects needed.

The Selects opened the tourney with a 1-1 tie against the Nitro. Kowalski scored and Reece Schroeder took the game MVP.

In their second game, the Selects lost 4-0 to the Hawks with goalie Shane Meadahl the game MVP.

The Selects then bowed 11-3 to the highly-rated Island Stars.

Reed Cashato, Kyle Sherwood and Ethan King, with a laser from the point, supplied goals for Vernon. Game MVP was Dean Whitcomb.

On Sunday, the teams were re-seeded and the Selects defeated the West Coast All Stars 1-0.

King, from the point, pocketed Vernon’s goal with Meadahl stoning the All-Stars for the shutout. Game MVP was Jason Shaigec.
