The Selkirk Saints were on the road against Eastern Washington University Friday, Mar. 1, falling to the Eagles 4 – 1 in their second-to-last regular season game.
After clinching the league title in a Feb. 16 game against the Eagles, the Saints found themselves in unusual territory after twenty minutes. Goals on a deflection and then a breakaway put the Saints down by two at the EWU recreation centre.
The Saints would argue against the Eagles third goal in the second period but it stood, leaving the Saints facing a long, uphill battle.
The Saints slipped one past EWU goaltender Jason Greenwell to edge closer at 3 – 1. The Eagles two goal lead stood through 40 minutes, with the Saints being outshot 29 – 21.
Less than a minute into the third, EWU made it a 4 – 1 game, which proved to be the final score.
The Saints away stats are now 10-2-0-0 to this point in their season and lead Simon Fraser University — who take on Thompson Rivers University tomorrow — by seven points.
Selkirk and EWU go at it again on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 7:30 p.m. in a back-to-back matchup which will be the final game of the regular season for both squads.
The Saints will look to build on their 4 – 2 record in the six times the two teams have met this season. The Saints have out-scored the EWU team 21 – 14 overall.
The final game is also fan and alumni appreciation night and will feature a $5,000 shoot to win contest.
The first playoff game for the Saints will be Friday, Mar. 8 at the Castlegar recreation complex; puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
