The Nanaimo DBL Timbermen expect to have the makings of another contender this year.
The city’s senior B lacrosse team opened camp on Monday at the Nanaimo Ice Centre with the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association season starting May 1.
“We should have started a little earlier, but we just wouldn’t get the guys out,” said Ken King, the team’s general manager. “Now we’re only going four practices and we’re jumping right into it. So they’ve got to be ready.”
Most of the players reported to camp in shape, King said, and will be able to work off any rust quickly.
Roger Dubyna is back as the team’s coach and some of the returning veterans include Kyle Couling, Shane Chalker, Brad Jones and Jaron and Jason Dubyna. Newcomer Riley Kemp is a key addition.
Some of the younger players at Monday’s practice showed potential to fit in with the T-men.
“They’ll figure it out,” King said. “They’ll all get to play in [our] exhibition game and we’ll see what happens.”
That exhibition game is against the Nanaimo Timbermen junior A team on April 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
