Senior B Timbermen snap out of slump

Nanaimo lacrosse team defeats Valley 14-8 at home

The senior B Nanaimo Timbermen hope that bumping their slump will help them break through.

The city’s West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association squad earned a convincing 14-8 victory Sunday against the Valley Rebels at Frank Crane Arena. Nanaimo had lost four straight before the win.

“The guys have been battling, even through the losing streak they’ve been putting in the effort, but we’ve just had a bunch of stuff that we’ve really needed to work on and improve on,” said Mike Maughan, T-men coach.

It clicked on Sunday, as the T-men played a rounded game and matched the opponent’s physicality when the game got rough at times.

“I thought we played really good; it was a good 60-minute game,” said Darrin Wilson, who scored eight points. “We just kept it simple and things just started rolling. We found ways to better each other.”

Maughan said the full three-period effort was important to his team as it wanted to take every opportunity to raise its game. He said his team is responding to its recent losses the right way.

“It was not acceptable to the group, which is good to see,” the coach said. “The guys want to do the right things to make those changes and get back on track here.”

Wilson scored five goals and had three assists Sunday. Corey Shires added three goals and three helpers and Joey Fendick also had a hat trick. Ryan Taylor had a goal and two assists and Josh Joseph and Simon Stocks were Nanaimo’s other scorers. Nick Patterson earned the win in goal.

The day before, the T-men lost 13-9 to the Victoria Wolves on the road. Travis Mickelson scored twice in that one, Shires and Andrew Miller each had a goal and three assists and Fendick had a goal and two helpers. Patterson and Matt Zeller tended goal.

GAME ON … The Timbermen host the Coquitlam Adanacs on Saturday (June 17) at 5 p.m. at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
