Oak Bay High’s senior boys soccer team heads into playoffs on a high, despite a narrow loss for first place AAA Senior Boys Island Championships last week.
The team fell 1-0 to Reynolds in the final game of the tournament hosted by Oak Bay.
“To make that improvement in a short period of time makes me proud of the guys,” coach Richard Fast said Friday. “We got beat by a better team today.”
Fast made special note that Koby Greaves played a consistent tournament and Diego Maffia, William King and Ben Tyson also had strong games.
“They’re a very well-organized and disciplined team. … The second half we pushed hard,” Fast said. “They’re difficult to break down. It was a good soccer match and exciting to watch.”
Eight teams earned spots through regional play and top teams advance to provincial championships. Reynolds and Oak Bay faced each other again in the Colonist Cup semi-final Tuesday at Braefoot Park after press deadline. The final date and place for that cup are not set yet.
“We’re playing well at the right time, just before playoffs,” Fast said.
Both Reynolds and Oak Bay earned a place at provincials in Burnaby from Nov. 24 to 26.
