The Hazelton Secondary school seniorgirls volleyball team started their season off with a 2-1 record at the Kitimat play day last Saturday.

Coach Marcel Melanson said this year, he believes his team has what it takes to have an impressive year.

“This team is very athletic and I have high expectations,” he said. “Lead by our seniors, this is the best team I have ever had.”

The Spartans lost their first game to Caledonia after falling 23-25 in their first set, winning 25-14 in the third, then losing 10-15 in the third match.

The team rebounded to take Smithers Secondary in two straight, 25-19 and 25-10.

In the final game of the day they beat Centennial in the same fashion winning the first set 25-21 and the second 25-18.

Tristan Morrison was the All Star of the day but Melanson said his four seniors are leading the court.

“This is the third year I have had Jessie de Boer, Dominique Melanson, Chelsea Carle and Lia Lazzarotto, and they are dominating,” he said.

This weekend the girls host their own play day on Saturday and residents are encouraged to come out and cheer on the home team.
