Senior Jewels bow out of playoffs

Senior Jewels Soccer Team lose 4-0 in quarter finals

The senior Jewels soccer team’s last game of the regular season was played out on home field last Monday.

After falling behind 1-0 within the first five minutes, the Jewels pushed back and made it a back-and-forth affair.

The Jewels were reward for their tireless effort in the second half, knotting the game at one a piece on a great individual effort by Sarina Fritsche.

Shortly afterwards, the Bears scored again to take the lead and, despite laying on the pressure, the Jewels were unable to even up the score. The final score was 2-1.

This result put the Jewels in fifth place in the league, having to travel to Norkam for the quarter finals.

The Jewels started the game well – one of their best starts of the year, said head coach Tricia Martin.

Just past the 20 minute mark, Norkam scored on a break away beating the charging goalie, Maggie Vistisen.

Norkam quickly doubled their lead on a wind-assisted through ball that caught the Jewels flat footed. Despite trailing 2-0 at half, the Jewels were still in the game.

The second half saw the game continue to shift back-and-forth, with the Jewels missing on a few scoring opportunities.

In the end, Norkam scored two more goals when they quickly counterattacked.

“Although the final score would indicate we were beaten handily the game itself indicated otherwise. We held our own against Norkam and just weren’t able to capitalize on our opportunities,” said Martin. “Our defensive line, in particular, Julia Anderson, Rachel Bootsma, Abbey Fabro and Jocelyn Friesen played a great game, shutting down many opportunities.

“This year ended all too quickly but both Liz Mair and myself were really impressed with the dedication and commitment of the team this year.”
