Surrey resident Isabella-Anna Bertold is on pace for a medal in Laser Radial sailing at the Pan-American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
One of seven athletes from Surrey or North Delta among the 491 members of the Canadian team in Mexico, the 20-year-old was third overall after two days of competition, having competed in four if the 10 races in the preliminary round.
Bertold placed third and fifth in her two races Monday, and added a third and fourth on Tuesday. She was third in the first race Wednesday, falling to sixth in the second.
“Still confused by the conditions out on the water but feel better about how I sailed today, even if the results are similar, a third and fourth,” Bertold tweeted Tuesday evening.
Bertold will race twice a day Friday and Saturday before the medal race on Sunday.

SOFTBALL
Team Canada, with Surrey’s Melanie Matthews and Jennifer Yee of North Delta in the lineup, is 3-1 (won-lost) in the softball tournament and all but assured a place in the playoff round.
The two veterans helped Canada to a 10-4 win over Puerto Rico Monday afternoon, a game which was called after five innings on the mercy rule.
Batting in the lead-off position, Matthews was two-for-three with two runs scored. Yee batted third, hitting a single in three at-bats and scoring once.
In the first of two games Tuesday, Matthews and Yee were both one-for-three, with Matthews hitting a triple in a 4-3 win over Venezuela. Kelsey Haberl of Burnaby, a former member of the Surrey Storm rep program, was two-for-three.
The Canadians stayed on the diamond for a game with Cuba, and dropped a 4-2 decision. Matthews and Yee had one single each.
Matthews drove in three runs in an 11-0 win over Argentina Wednesday morning.
CYCLING
Jacob Schwingboth of Surrey was part of the Canadian cycling team which competed Monday. The three-man Canadian team was sixth in the Team Sprint qualifying race, and fifth in the four-man Team Pursuit qualifying event. The top four teams in each category raced for medals later in the day.
Schwingboth competed in the Omnium race Tuesday, and placed fourth in the Flying Lap qualifier Tuesday morning, earning a place in the two medal events later in the day. The 20-year-old was eighth in the points race and 10th in the elimination.
BASEBALL
Canada began the baseball tournament with a 5-2 win over Puerto Rico, with Cole Armstrong of Surrey going one-for-four at the plate and making four putouts at the catcher position.
Richmond native Jimmy Van Ostrand, who played for the North Delta Blue Jays of the B.C. Premier League, was two-for-four with a double.
Canada will play Cuba today (Thursday) and Venezuela on Saturday, needing at least one win to qualify for the semifinal round next week.
FIELD HOCKEY
National team veterans Sukhwinder Singh, 33, of Surrey and Delta’s Jagdish Gill, 27, will be on the Canadian team which opens play today against Trinidad and Tobago. Other round robin games will be played Saturday against Chile and Monday against Barbados before semifinal games are play Oct. 27.
Canada won gold at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Singh was a member of that team.
