PARKSVILLE — From the greens comes word Parksville Lawn Bowling Club’s recent Shades of Pink tournament “was awesome. We had great weather, pumped up participants, and we raised over $2,400 for care of local cancer patients and their families.”
The Shades of Pink Tournament, says PLBC’s Carol Bucyk, is held every year “and its main purpose is to make life easier for cancer patients and their families and to raise awareness to the importance of screening and early detection.”
The women lawn bowlers of the club dress in pink for this event, while the men set up the greens for play, “then wear beautifully stitched pink aprons to serve lunch to the female players later in the day.
“It’s great that the men support us so well in this endeavour,” said Bucyk.
Sixteen triples teams (48 women in all) took to the greens for the tourney, played out August 15, and volunteers for the Canadian Cancer Society Parksville/Qualicum Beach Unit for Support Programs were also in attendance to open the tournament by rolling the first bowl and to accept the cheque for the money raise through the tournament.
