Trail’s Silver City Days highlights its athletic side this week with a variety of events scheduled for the serious and arm-chair athletes.
Opening tonight is the AM Ford Bocce Classic, a booming phenomenon at Silver City Days. This year organizer Pat Zanier says that the numbers have increased again from 96 to 128 people participating, for a total of 64 teams competing in the fun three-day event.
The tournament rolls out at 6 p.m. tonight in the Trail Curling Club, and continues Friday starting at 2 p.m., with the finals going at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
The Greater Trail Minor Hockey 3-on-3 Tournament will take over the Trail Memorial Centre parking lot on Saturday with 22 teams from Jr. Novice up to Pee Wee participating.
Local sponsors also pitched in this year to provide refreshments and added fencing to keep the balls within the playing area.
“We have a bunch of Trail Smoke Eaters that are in town are going to referee our games,” said organizer Sean Rudnitski. “Last year we kind of scrambled to put something together but this year (with the fencing) it’s going to be awesome.”
The action continues on Sunday with the Trail Parks and Recreation’s Pickle Ball Tournament at the Willi Krause Fieldhouse from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Open to all levels, the event is a fun way to hone your skills with lots of great prizes to be won.
Arguably, the most popular event is the Silver City Days Fun Run on Sunday with close to 300 participants running or walking the five or 10-kilometre race though Sunningdale and downtown Trail. Fun Run volunteer Dan Horan says with the opening of the Columbia River Sky Walk the 10-k offers a more scenic route this year.
“It should be good, and hopefully be a nice day with lots of people there.”
Those who enter early will be eligible to win a draw for a $200 gift certificate at Gerick Cycle and Sports. To register go online at trackie.com/online-registration. Registration is also available the day of the event from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at Gyro Park, prior to the Fun Run start at 9 a.m.
