Silver lining for Titans

Langley Fundamental places second at junior girls championships

After winning an emotion-filled semifinal match, the Langley Fundamental Titans ran out of gas in the provincial championship final.

The Titans wound up winning the silver medal at the junior girls’ volleyball championships on Saturday at the Richmond Olympic Oval, losing 2-0 to the South Delta Sun Devils.

Just a few days prior, the Titans had defeated South Delta in the Fraser Valley championship final.

In the provincial semifinals, the Titans defeated Pacific Academy, the first time they had beaten their Surrey rivals.

“We played the best game we have ever played against them, it was just amazing,” said Langley Fundamental coach Laura O’Reilly.

During that match, O’Reilly called timeout after finding out Langley Fundamental’s junior boys team had won gold at their provincial championships in Abbotsford.

The news of the boys’ teams success seemed to give the Titans a little something extra.

“It was such an emotional high,” O’Reilly said.

“They played with such heart; it was all us from that point on.”

But with little recovery time after that match, the Titans went right into the provincial final.

“I don’t think we had anything left,” O’Reilly said.

“We just ran out of gas and South Delta is a very good team.”

The Titans battled hard but the Sun Devils seemed to have an answer for every hit.

“To their credit, (South Delta) does everything well,” O’Reilly said.

And while they may not have won the gold medal, the coach was amazed at just how special the team and the season were.

Hannah Beaton and Brie O’Reilly earned all-star awards for the Titans.
