The Glengarry Skating Club will take its audience back to 1978.
That is the theme, 1978! featuring Grease for their Ice Parade at the South Okanagan Events Centre on April 13 at 6:30 p.m.
“It’s obviously the music,” said Glengarry Skating Club coach Trevor Buttenham on why Grease was chosen. “It’s fun, it’s a little over the top. It’s actually been a lot of fun to do with them. They are clearly having a good time.”
The intermediate and senior skaters are taking a liking to the music in practice. Buttenham said the skaters approached him on having that theme. Making appearances will be Hungry Hungry Hippos, VW bugs and Pink Panthers. Also, The TBirds and Pink Ladies from the musical “Grease” (which debuted in 1978), will also take to the ice.
The club will showcase the talent of their 57 skaters aged three to 18. The skaters represent all levels from PreCanskate (Learn to Skate) to CompetitiveSkate (competitive figure skating). The first half of the show will feature the younger skaters, while the older group will complete it.
Tickets are $10 for the show, while kids five and under get in free.
Glengarry Club Skaters wrapped up the competitive season last month at the Kelowna Super Series Final. Buttenham said it was a tough competition since several clubs from the Lower Mainland attended. Most of the Glengarry skaters saw the Lower Mainland athletes for the first time because they would not travel to that area for competitions, keeping them local.
“It is always a bit of an eye-opener for them,” said Buttenham. “We had a couple of good results.”
