Langley’s Matthew Williams is planning for a trip to Europe, as part of 15 athletes selected to represent B.C. in a Special Olympics World Winter Games.
Williams, a speed skater, will head to Austria from March 14 to 25.
He’ll be accompanied by Surrey resident and speed skating coach Elizabeth Roman.
The other athletes include Abbotsford’s Paige Norton, another speed skater, North Delta figure skater Marc Theriault, and Surrey alpine skier Susan Wang.
Team Canada will be the third largest appearing at the games, and will compete in sports including cross-country skiing, floor hockey, and snowshoeing.
There will be 3,000 athletes with intellectual disabilites and 1,100 coaches from as many as 110 countries at the nine-day competition.
“Our Team Canada athletes, coaches, and mission staff are well prepared for this year’s World Winter Games,” said Marian Coulson, chef de mission for Team Canada. “The passion and skill level of our team is unmatched; we expect great results at these games.”
