Five Hazelton figure skaters have been practicing hard and are heading off to skate in the first Northwest Jamboree in Kitimat this weekend.

The event was created by the coaches in the “West Area” to create a wind-up event for the skaters in the area. The hope is that the event will encourage team building as well as performance even though it is not considered a competition.

Skaters will be grouped by an organizing committee according to their highest freeskate test passed and will be combined with participants from the various clubs. Then they will participate in different events which will essentially be components of skating such as spins, jumps, footwork and a small freeskate type of routine and be ranked in one of four categories which are, gold (four points), silver (three points), bronze (two points) and pewter (one point). Each skaters points from the individual events will be added to their team total and then each of the four teams will be given a medal depending on how they ranked.

In addition to the medal events there will also be several other events such as a flag making competition and spirit and artistic awards.

The fun filled weekend which is open to all skater or any skill level and age will be a two day event starting on Saturday and the public is invited to come out and cheer on the skaters at the Tamitik Arena. For more information contact Michelle Abercrombie at 250-632-2858.
