The Vernon Ski Club recently hosted its annual Kal Tire Round Up.

The round up is a fun-filled two-day event with a western theme which wraps up the club’s 10-week entry level race and all mountain programs.

Athletes sped down the Under the Hill Downhill and Bucking Bronco Ski Cross, negotiating plenty of rollers and banked turns and reaching speeds up to 69 km/hr.

Although the racers had to face fog and a snow storm on the Saturday, there were plenty of smiles both days with visits from the Silver Fox, a hoedown barbecue lunch and awards ceremonies in the village, including more than 80 draw prizes donated by the Olympia Cycle & Ski, Attridge Snow Ski Wake and Sun Valley Source for Sports, and two pairs of skis donated by Blizzard.

Competitors included athletes between the ages of four and 14 from Vernon, Kelowna, Kamloops, Vancouver, Mt. Washington, on Vancouver Island, Prince George, Salmo and Toronto, plus members of Special Olympics B.C.

In the boys Ski Cross, locals Nash Steele, Asher Kuiken, Deklen McDonald, Logan Stewart, Parker Munroe, Christopher Kersey, Brennan O’Flaherty and Colby Bell took home gold medals in their respective age categories.

For the girls, Clara Cox, Cassidy Cruikshank, Aida Mills, Charlotte Wargniez, Jamie Robinson, Katrina Fink and Crystal Rohrer captured gold.

In the boys Downhill, Coletin Pawlyshyn, Nash Steele, Braden Blankley, Ben Straight, Brennan O’Flaherty and Colby Bell struck gold in their age groups.

On the girls side, it was Clara Cox, Sarah Stew, Sierra Munroe, Alessia Galvagno, Tova Galvagno, Jasmyn Yakura, Rane Smith and Elizabeth Isbister that won downhill gold.

The Vernon Ski Club would like to thank all the volunteers and sponsors Kal Tire, Silver Star Mountain Resort, North Okanagan Orthodontic Clinic, Okanagan Fertilizer, Monashee Surveying & Geomatics, KPMG, Everton Ridge Homes, Capri Insurance, Vernon Toyota, Speedpro Signs, RBC Dominion Securities, A&G Supply and Nixon Wenger for making the fifth annual Kal Tire Round Up a great success.
