Ski report: Peter Behncke top ten at Canada Winter Games

Peter Behncke proved he can perform under pressure this week while competing in the alpine skiing events at the Canada Winter Games in Nova Scotia. After an excellent first run in the giant slalom, he was sitting in ninth place and just a little over a second off the leader. Keeping his cool, Behncke was 11th on the second run but held onto ninth overall with a combined time just two and a half seconds back from the winner, Kyle Farrow from Ontario.

Excited after his strong result, he came out charging to land in 13th after the Super-G portion of the super combined, but did not finish the slalom run. On the final day of alpine racing, Behncke skied solidly into 13th place in the slalom.

Two of his teammates helped B.C. earn third spot in the medal count: Broderick Thompson of Whistler won the super combined, and Kailee Darlington – also of Whistler – was third in the giant slalom. B.C. took home 88 medals overall, behind Ontario with 110 and Quebec with 137.

Other members of the Revelstoke Ski Club’s FIS team have had an outstanding week: Alix Petit earned gold in the J1 division of the slalom at Red mountain after a fourth and a fifth in giant slalom. Erika Park was tenth and 11th overall in giant slalom, earning herself two personal best points results. Dominic Unterberger was fifth J1 on the men’s side in giant slalom, also scoring a personal best result.

Next week the K2 team travels to their provincial championships in Panorama, while the Nancy Greene teams will host the other clubs from the Okanagan zone for two days of dual slalom and kombi racing. Come check out the action at RMR on Saturday and Sunday!
