Skier set for Canada Games

South Surrey cross-country skier Mary Benson is headed for Halifax, N.S. next week, where she’ll compete at the Canada Winter Games.

Benson, who competed at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Whistler, will compete in para-nordic skiing. She’ll be assisted by longtime partner, Kathy Oxner.

Benson, 50, suffered a serious brain injury 12 years ago, as a result of what doctors think was a severe allergic reaction to prescription medication she was taking at the time.

After rehabbing the injury for two-and-a-half years – she had to relearn all her motor skills – Benson took up cross-country skiing, and quickly progressed to the point she was competing on the nordic circuit in Europe.

The Canada Games begin Friday, and wrap up Feb. 27.
