The Sladen Moore Lakers ambushed the Penticton Ice Dragons 8-2 in their Bantam Female A Hockey Classic Saturday morning at Civic Arena.

Mairyn Tucker and Emily Clarke each scored twice for the Lakers, while singles came from Andie Kaneda, Jenna Fletcher, Carly Southam and Juli Gilowski.

Clarke added two assists, while Tucker, Kaneda, Abbey Magnus and Jordan Butler also provided helpers.

The Lakers fell 8-1 to the South Island Royals of Victoria in their tournament opener Friday night at Civic with Tucker breaking the Royals’ shutout bid in the third period.

The Williams Lake Timberwolves clipped the West Kootenay Wildcats 2-1 and the Kelowna Rockets tied Penticton 3-3 in other Friday games.

Sladen Moore, with Keith Tucker as head coach, finished preliminary play Saturday afternoon against the Timberwolves.

The favoured Royals faced West Kootenay and Kelowna in their last round-robin games Saturday.

The Classic final goes today at 2:15 p.m. at Civic.

Meanwhile, the Watkin Motors Pee Wee Tier 1 Vipers split their games Friday at the Salmon Arm  Silvertips Tournament.

Rowan Miller pulled the hat trick in the Vipers’ 5-3 loss to the St. Albert Saints and scored once as the Vipers recovered for a 4-1 over South Delta.

Head coach Sandy Moger told the players after the win: “That was your best performance, best effort of the season.”

Solid defence and furious forechecking kept South Delta on their heels. Goalie Tyler Sedlacek was stellar.

Cole Boyarski, Eric Noren and Corey Lazar completed the Watkin Motors’ offence.

Quin Williamson, Zack Laranjo and Griffen Fletcher each scored twice as Billy D’s Family Restaurant Xplosion stormed the Winfield Bruins 9-3 in Pee Wee Super League action.

Tyden Louis, Aaron Jodoin and Liam Reid added singles for the Xplosion.

Said Xplosion head coach Dan Wilson: “We played a played a solid game all around, with some timely saves from our goalie, Eric Foufoulas, and 4 goals from our defencemen.”

The Vernon Home Building Centre Vipers hold their Midget Tier 1 home tournament next Friday at Civic Arena. The Vipers will play North West Calgary Friday at 6:15 and then face Fort St. Jon (10:30 a.m.) and North Shore Winter Club (7:15 p.m.) in Saturday play. Fans are urged to bring items for the Vernon Food Bank.
