The Williams Lake Wrestling Club’s annual Smackdown elementary playday has been rescheduled.
The tournament, originally scheduled for Jan. 28, will now take place on March 3.
“The only difference is the venue has changed to Williams Lake Secondary School,” said Sonia Conrod, president of the Williams Lake Wrestling Club. “We will take kindergarten to Grade 7 [wrestlers] for this tournament and we look forward to seeing everyone on the mat.”
The local wrestling club said the tournament was postponed and rescheduled to give teachers, coaches and parents more time to prepare their athletes to wrestle.
“Rick Bryan [former WLWC president] has moved to Vancouver Island and is no longer [coaching] in our district,” Conrod said.
“He works so hard to give students the opportunity to wrestle, and he is sadly missed. We are doing the best we can to keep the dream alive and to give kids the chance to try the sport, but we do need help and support from within the schools to do this.”
Anyone interested in registering a team at Smackdown, or anyone interested in hosting the year-end championships is asked to contact Conrod at 250-305-2959 or by e-mail at wlwrestling@hotmail.com.
“Williams Lake has a good reputation of producing outstanding athletes in wrestling,” she said.
“We want to keep giving our kids these opportunities.”
Prior to Smackdown, several WLWC athletes will be in 100 Mile House on Feb. 17 for the Wrestlemania Elementary Wrestling Tournament at Peter Skene Ogden secondary.
