The Winterland Ski and Sports Amazing Race is looking to be quite the event, bringing a little bit of TV excitement to small town Smithers.
The event is based on the reality TV show The Amazing Race, and while entrants won’t be travelling around the world, they’ll be fulfilling challenges on Hudson Bay Mountain with the same intent as their TV counterpart: to have fun, and to win.
“We just wanted to do something that was fun,” Winterland owner Richard Norton said. “It’s our thrilling Thursday on the mountain and we wanted to do something to draw people to the mountain.”
For obvious reasons, he can’t say much about the challenges that entrants will be facing as it will ruin the surprise, but it should be fun for everyone, Norton said. It is designed for people of all ages and abilities, although one person in each team of two must be over 18.
“You don’t have to be a great skier or snowboarder,” Norton said. “It’s really how well you complete those challenges as to how you progress in the race.”
Held on Feb. 24, Norton hopes to see lots of people come out and participate. Registration for the event is required by Feb. 21, so those interested should drop by Winterland to sign up. The winner of the day will receive a $1,000 shopping spree at Winterland.
“I’m really excited about it, I can see it becoming our first annual,” Norton said.
