Highlanders split opening roadie

The Victoria Highlanders started the 2011 season with a stunner, beating the 2010 Professional Development League champion Portland Timbers 1-0 in Portland on Saturday.

It was Portland’s first loss after a 20-game undefeated streak.

Highlanders’ goalie Elliot Mitrou, an Oak Bay High grad, stopped two penalty kicks to preserve the narrow lead.

Midfielder Jordie Hughes was injured on a harsh tackle from behind, sending him to hospital for several stitches over his right eye. Sub Jared Stephens came in at the 40th minute and scored from the top of the box in the 54th minute off a pass from Andrew Ravenhill. Mitrou was a surprise starter in place of injured Trevor Stiles, who did not make the trip.

On Sunday the Highlanders lost 2-1 to the Kitsap Pumas. Hughes, back from injury for Sunday’s tilt, scored on a penalty kick in the 40th minute. The Pumas stole the game, however, with a 79th minute penalty shot and Cam Hepple goal in the 85th minute.

Next up for the Highlanders is another road game, Sunday (May 15) against the Abbotsford Mariners.
