Soccer Scene: Blazers win back-to-back titles

For the second year in a row, the Semiahmoo U12 Blazers are South District Cup championships after defeating SFC Roadrunners 1-0 Sunday.

Last year, the Blazers captured the cup in the blue division, but this year – thanks to a long winning streak – were bumped up into the red division.

In the championships game, Semi’s Neelam Uppal scored the game’s lone goal, knocking the ball over the line after a corner kick from Ashley Richmond.

Blazers’ keeper Brittany Cairns was between the pipes to earn the shutout.

A day earlier, in semifinal action, Semiahmoo edged the Surdel Dragons 2-1, with Kalli DuMoulin and Emma Ridley-Thomas scoring for the Peninsula squad.

Cup win

The Semiahmoo Tigers won the U12 Blue District Cup Sunday – and in convincing fashion, no less – after a 5-0 win over the Tswwassen Hurricanes at Dennis Elsom Park in North Delta.

Prior to the title game, the Tigers edged the Semiahmoo Hornets in semifinals, and under poor weather conditions Wednesday beat the Ladner Rangers, 2-1 in quarter-final action.

Scorpions victorious

The Semiahmoo Scorpions edged the West Vancover Fusion 2-1 in U16 Gold girls soccer action at South Surrey Athletic Park last weekend.

Ashley Simpson and Stephanie Cooper scored for the Scorpions, while Amy Cornish, Sarah Strachan and Emily Bonshor all shared goaltending duties.

Helping out the trio of netminders was the strong defensive play of Katie Filice, Laura Evans, Ashton Cicierksi and Sarah Strachan, as well as Keyanna Russell, who had an excellent game.

Midfielders Kennedy Britz and Allegra Quadri also turned in strong performances, as did Bailey Pye, Stephanie Cooper and Sydney Taylor, all of whom were constant offensive threats.
